Lakota East defeated the Colerain Cardinals 11-4 on Tuesday, moving the Hawks to 5-1 (5-0 GMC). The Thunderhawks did not need any comebacks in the game as they scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning, and never looked back.
The high-scoring inning was highlighted by Junior Drew Tower’s first career home run, a 2 run shot. The tower was outdone at the plate by Senior Colin Sweeney who went 3-5 (2 2Bs and 5 RBIs), the senior reached base 4 of his five at bats and accounted for 6 of East’s runs on the day. Senior Jacob Finley and Junior Sam Pennix also notched a double during the game. In total, the Hawks 23 runners on base and were able to capitalize when they had runners in scoring position.
On the mound, Senior Jack Villarreal earned his 2nd win of the year. Working 5 2/3 innings, allowed 3 runs (none earned) on 5 hits, and struck out 10 Cardinal batters. The senior lefty was relieved by fellow senior Connor Frank, who worked 1 1/3 innings, allowing a single run on 1 hit and striking out 1 hitter.
The Hawks will be on the road to face Middletown on Wednesday, before they head down to Dickson, Tennessee for four games over Easter weekend. Currently, the Hawks are tied with Mason for 1st place in the GMC.
