The Lakota East Ladyhawks Wrestling Team traveled to the Western Brown Hammer and Anvil Tournament on December 9, 2023.. This was the first competition in the inaugural season for female wrestling at Lakota East. Makirah Hall is the only wrestler who comes to this season with experience in wrestling; she wrestled at Lakota Kids Club and at Liberty Junior before coming to East. Sophia Bermudez, Kendall Dexter, Jorja Lunkenheimer, Scarlet Frentzel, Sammy Fretzche, Emily Baker, Corinna Sowah, Jasmyn Ashford, and Sydney Hall are all first-year wrestlers. Jorja Lunkenheimer went 1-2 on the day and placed 5th, and Corinna Sowah was 2-2 on the day as well. Jasmyn Ashford placed 5th, going 3-2 for the day. Makirah Hall won 3 and lost 1 to finish 3rd in her weight class. Sydney Hall led the team with a 4-0 record for the day and was the first-ever girls' champion for the Thunderhawks!
The Ladyhawk wrestlers are learning what it means to compete and how wrestling works. The girls are divided into 14 separate weight classes to ensure a level of parity between competitors. The weight classes are 100,105,110,115,120,125,130,135,140,145,155,170,190 and 235. Competitions are usually held on the weekends. We hope to use this season to prepare for the Ohio State Championship Series which is likely to be sectionals, districts, and state held in late February. Wrestling became an OHSAA officially sanctioned sport during the 2022-23 school year.
The Ladyhawks travel to Springfield Northwestern on Saturday 12/16.
